Most of the improved varieties of rye grass seed have been developed to provide a rye grass that has better wear resistance, shade tolerance and resistance to various diseases and insects that affect
ryegrasses. Some of the newer ryegrass varieties also have traits that help to extend the area of adaptation or planting area.
Annual Rye Grass
ANNUAL RYEGRASS ( Lolium multiflorum) - also called Italian Rye Grass,
is a cool season grass generally used as a temporary planting for overseeding warm or cool

Perennial Rye Grass
PERENNIAL RYEGRASS (Lolium perenne) - is a ryegrass that will live year after year as a lawn or pasture in the Northern USA. If planted in the Southern USA, perennial
ryegrass will behave as an annual variety and will die off completely during the summer months usually in May/June.
Perennial Rye Grass for Pasture Use
Highly digestible and a favorite of cattle, horses, all animals including wildlife such as deer. A valuable winter and spring grazing crop and
can be used alone or seeded with small grain crops to lengthen the season. Can be
overseeded onto other pasture grasses. A fast growing multi-use forage crop requiring
minimal tillage and competitive enough to make a place for itself.

Make sure the variety you plant is an endophyte safe variety - intended for pasture use. Many of the newer turf type lawn varieties should NOT be planted for forages.

help you to try to achieve the qualities to best improve an existing lawn or start a new one. Perennial Rye grass is also used in Cool Seasons lawns in grass seed mixtures at ratios of 10%
to 50% to provide more density to the turf grass lawn.
